If you like to sample the local, seasonal produce of the areas you visit, going to the local food markets is a must! You can browse the stalls to see the local produce in each season. And you can shop to prepare typical Basque dishes in the fully equipped kitchen at Kostoenea Rural Passivhaus Retreat.

There’s a farmers’ market in Hondarribia 2 days a week from 8:00 to 13:00. On Saturdays you can find it on Calle San Pedro in the Portua neighbourhood and on Wednesdays on Calle Damarri in the Alameda, where local famers display and sell their produce. On offer you will see different types of fruit and vegetables, pulses, cheeses, homemade bread and pastries, plants and flowers, etc.

You can also take the little boat over to the French town of Hendaye, which takes just 5-10 minutes. Here there are several markets to choose from:

In the summer months (July and August):

If you want to buy fresh fish, you can visit one of the local fishmongers in Hondarribia. They will prepare the fish for you so that all you have to do is cook it. We like to go to Pescados Aguado on Calle Santiago. They always serve us with a smile and they have a great produce.

At Kostoenea you have a full kitchen and barbecue, and everything you might need to prepare delicious dishes for lunch or dinner. And enjoy a relaxing after-dinner drink on the terrace. Followed by a nap on the sunbed or a night watching the stars in our little paradise.
